With the advent of the Internet and email, letter writing seems to be outdated and time-consuming. But there are certain situations, like business proposals or agreements, school admissions, job recommendations, etc., where we have to write a letter. Hence, for such situations, we are left with no other option than writing a letter of intent.
But what is a letter of intent? Well, it basically refers to a letter of interest or memorandum which clearly expresses your intention for a specific action. For example, if you are writing for a business agreement between two parties, your letter will include the key points of the agreement to be signed by both the parties.
Likewise, a letter of intent for a job will include points that can catch the attention of your employer, and make you most eligible for that specific job post. So if you want to write a letter of intent for a job, graduate school, or a real estate deal, but are not very sure what to include in your letter, then check out these examples.
Writing a Letter of Intent
For Employment
Your employment letter should reflect your professionalism, hence make sure that name, titles, company name, and address are all on the left side of your letter. Start writing with a proper salutation in order to show respect.
The format should comprise three main parts, the introduction, the main body, and the concluding paragraph. Hence, your letter should follow this format, and the content should be segregated accordingly. In the introductory paragraph, introduce yourself by explaining your qualifications, skills, and prior job experience.
In the following paragraph, explain why you are perfect for this job, and provide relevant information supporting this point. Finally, in the concluding paragraph, express your interest in that particular job profile and your willingness to join that organization. Close and sign your letter thanking the concerned person for his/her time and attention.
For Graduate School
Your letter of intent for graduate school should reflect your interest for studies and enthusiasm to join that particular school. Hence, give each and every detail of why you want to join that graduate school and how fit you are for it. Start the letter by introducing yourself and giving a brief idea about your background.
Talk about your strengths and talents, and what about the program appeals to you the most. Explain how the program will help you achieve your future goals and also write about your plans after graduating from the school. While closing the letter, give a concise description of where you see yourself heading after you have completed the graduate program.
To Purchase Real Estate
The foremost step for writing a letter of intent to purchase real estate is to note down various points on which you and your seller or real estate agent agree. Ensure that all the points on which both the parties do not agree are not included in the letter of intent.
Your letter should include your name, address of the property, purchase offer (including the down payment, your loan time period, and your contract closing time), and any element that will affect the purchasing process (like repairs, house inspection, etc.).
Do not forget to mention that this letter is just an agreement on your intent to purchase the property, not a binding legal document. Ensure that there is enough space at the bottom of the letter for you and your seller to sign. Do not forget to mention the date.
After writing your letter of intent, proofread it well, and make sure there are no grammatical or spelling mistakes in it. Be honest and confident while writing the letter and do keep a separate copy of it for yourself.
