Urban fiction is usually written by and about African Americans and other people of color. However, the following authors are what make these reads five stars.

You may be wondering where to start if you’ve never read urban fiction books, or if it’s a new genre to you. Lucky for you, we’re sharing our top urban fiction books with you. In no particular order, these are the top urban fiction books of today.

The Coldest Winter Ever By K’wan

The Coldest Winter was nominated as one of America’s best-loved urban fiction novels by PBS’s The Great American Read. This story paints a great picture of life in the projects as the child of a prominent Brooklyn drug-dealing family. Everyone around her lives in poverty and on assistance while she and her family have all the material possessions anyone could desire. However, when a cold winter wind blows her life in a direction she doesn’t want to go, she’s put to the test. The story reveals how she’s unwilling to lose and will do anything to stay on top.

Flyy Girl By Omar Tyree

This novel is one that most new urban fiction readers are looking for because it gives a fresh new talented voice. Tracy Ellison, a young girl with knockout looks, slanted hazel eyes, tall hair, and high-attitude, is the main character. The story follows her as she comes of age during the hip-hop era. Tracy loves the material things in life. But, when she’s introduced into a world of sex, violence, and heartbreak she begins to reevaluate her path. A phenomenal African American coming-of-age story, Flyy Girl is destined to be an urban fiction classic.

Addicted By Zane

Addicted is not only a New York Times bestseller, but was also adapted into a major motion picture distributed through Lionsgate. This read tells the provocative story of one married woman’s struggle to deal with the fall-out of her forbidden desires.
