More than a Question
How are you? is considered more of a greeting than a question. It is a polite way of acknowledging someone’s presence.
It is a courtesy to ask people about their well-being. “How are you doing?” and “How are you” are some of the most common ways of doing that. This greeting is also used quite often, as a way to begin a conversation with someone. Depending on your relation with him/her, the same question is asked in an informal or a formal way.
